Introduction
The information in this resource is based on research funded through the Adult Literacy Research Program (ALRP). The National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER) managed this research program on behalf of the former Commonwealth Department of Education, Science and Training (now Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR)). The ALRP was funded from 2002 until 2006.
Research topics ranged from adult literacy teaching and learning approaches and outcomes, to the professional development needs of literacy practitioners. Topics also covered various literacy practices and delivery approaches across Indigenous and ethnic communities, industry, volunteer and community settings.
This resource for adult literacy practitioners has been developed through a review of the ALRP research.
The key messages from the research have been drawn out and then been pulled together under a number of different themes - these are shown in the navigation panel to the left.
For the purposes of this resource, in most cases, 'literacy' is taken to mean 'language, literacy and numeracy' (LLN).
How to get the most from this resource
- The resource is designed to get you thinking about how you can apply this information in your work.
- Each page provides a brief summary of key messages based on a particular theme or topic (e.g., numeracy in the workplace), as well as links to other useful related reports, available through the NCVER VOCED database, or through practical web-based resources.
- Within each theme we have posed some questions that may help you link the research findings to your own work.
- You can also share some of your own experiences or learnings through the provision of a 'comments' box at the end of the pages.
- We have based our summaries on what the research has told us to date and we acknowledge there are 'gaps' in what we know.
